Dear Family and Friends,
As many of you know, I am a member of the Board of Directors for Journey of Hope, a nonprofit organization that helps children and their families process grief due to the death of a loved one. Our peer group program is offered free of charge to nearly 500 people each year here in North Texas. I have a personal reason to care about the work we do.
Many years ago, I lost a cousin to cancer who left behind his wife and two young children. I was with the family and can vividly recall the moments leading up to the painful phone call we received. We joined together to try and help them heal and watched the children grow up without their father. Not long after that event, I lost my best friend to a tragic accident. I could not find words to comfort his family when I could not come to terms with losing him myself. I still can't. That combination of losses affects me to this day. When I hear from the families who have benefited from our program, I am grateful they have found us. I wonder how the lives of all of my family members and my best friend's family would have turned out if we had an organization like Journey of Hope to support us during those lonely and devastating experiences.
Today, I have the ability to access resources to help me with my grief, while so many others cannot. One in seven children experience the death of a loved one by the time they are ten years old. Approximately one in 20 children experience the death of a parent before they reach the age of 18. I know you can support many organizations, but none can so profoundly impact a family during their grief like Journey of Hope. Our program allows mourning to take place in a safe, caring, and nurturing environment - a place that gives children and their families what they need, for as long as they want it.
I am reaching out to you today to ask if you will help us make a difference in the 500 lives we will touch this year. The more we raise the more we can help. Any amount, and I do mean any, will be greatly appreciated and put to good use.
Thanks so much for considering my request.
Warmly,
Jama
